Real Warmth...

As I have been learning to adjust to widowhood, over and over again, it has been the people in my life who have pulled me through. And they keep showing up, in huge and small ways. It's a blessing I cannot measure.

Recently, a customer arrived with a cat for us to groom and a barn quilt. She paints them and teaches classes on the art. I've admired her work when she posts pictures on social media, and I am thrilled to be the recipient of her talent.  I can't wait to hang it!

A few days later, my friend Brenda showed up like she does every November, with a car full of greens and winter berries. She stuffed my big vintage bathtub and another planter with some merry boughs, and decorated the arbor, too. I love spending a little time with her, so this was quite a treat.

I had to remove the autumn pumpkins from the tubs, so I loaded them, along with a few spent chrysanthemums, into my yard cart and gleefully delivered them to the goats. I knew they'd be excited, and they were.

They have made a serious dent in the gourds, with some help from the chickens, who also enjoyed the bounty.

One evening last week, as I sat down to dinner with a glass of wine, there was a firm knock at the door. A man I recognized as living in the area stood there with three bunches of dried lavender, each neatly tied with twine. "We are moving," he told me. "A few years ago you nicely bought some apple trees my little girls had grown, and we were thankful. I wanted to give you some lavender before we go."

There it was, a fragrant reminder that small acts can have a huge and lasting impact. I've been the grateful recipient of so many kindnesses; I am happily anticipating paying them forward.
