And what is so rare...

... as a day in June?
After yesterday evenings storm there was a double rainbow over the meadow. The brighter rainbow shows up best in this image, but there is a fainter one arching to the left. Something about this place lends itself to rainbows, we seen them often in the eastern sky.

Those who live in warmer climates will not be impressed with my garden shot, but it is looking good for a Maine garden in June! In this bed I have garlic, Yukon gold potatoes, bush beans, broccolli, 2 kinds of cabbage, spring lettuce mix, spinach and peas. There is a new, larger garden too. It is filled with tomato, pepper, squash and other plants.

I love the snapping sound of a screen store slapping shut. It reminds me of the million times I flew out the porch door of my childhood home, intent on summer adventures. I have my own screen door now, put up in April or May and taken down, with regret, in the late fall. It is a badge of good weather and welcomes breezes to tickle the lace curtains and make them dance.

Rainbows and reality...

Today I had to ask a friend if she was safe at home with her partner. I've never asked anyone that question before, and the answer is haunting me. "I think so," she said. "But no one ever really knows."

This makes me realize that I am blinded here, in my little rainbow-tinted world. I forget that some women go home to a place where they don't feel entirely safe with the person they are supposed to be closest to.

So tonight I am feeling rather even more grateful than usual. Because really? I do know.

Moments filled with life...

On days when loss weighs heavy I find it helpful to concentrate on moments that reverberate with life.

Things like puppies playing with unbridled exuberance on a sprawling green lawn.
Things like walking into my dining room and finding that the eastern sun has sprayed a thousand dancing rainbows onto every surface.

3 reasons to clean my kitchen...

I had planned to haul a big pile of brush from one point in the yard to another after work. But then storm clouds rolled in and rain drops pattered down, so I turned to housework. My kitchen needed some deep cleaning. It needed counters scrubbed and cabinets wiped and windows polished. In the midst of shining things up I glanced out the window and saw a beautiful rainbow.

A little later I looked out a different window and saw this very handsome Red Winged blackbird. He posed for one long instant so I could capture his image.

And then I saw this very fine fox, trotting purposefully through the meadow. He was unconcerned with me taking his portrait.

And despite my frequent pauses to "shoot" the beauty outside my window, the kitchen got spiffed up nicely.

Basking...

Monday, while sitting at my desk writing a magazine article, my daughter came into the room. With her snake.
The sun was shining in. My kid put her snake on the window sill and left the room. The snake stayed there, basking in the sun, motionless. For a long time. Meanwhile the sun hit the prism hanging there... the walls were dancing with rainbows. Reptiles and rainbows. An incongruent combination.

Conner luck...

My husband and I joke about the "Conner luck."

This "luck" includes such things as finding the perfect parking spot, having great weather on a day forecast to be lousy, stumbling upon fabulous bargains or meeting just the right person at just the right time.

This weekends Conner luck was multi faceted, including viewing this amazing rainbow when we reached the summit of Cadillac Mt.

The Conner luck... a good thing to marry into! It is spangled with rainbows.
